Press Release: CRC Partners with Cities of Carlsbad, Encinitas and Oceanside to Prevent Homelessness

Community Resource Center Partners with Cities of Carlsbad, Encinitas and Oceanside to Prevent Homelessness

Encinitas, Calif., July 28, 2020—In partnership with the cities of Carlsbad, Encinitas and Oceanside, Community Resource Center (CRC) launched new and enhanced homelessness prevention and intervention assistance in North County San Diego this month. CRC is expanding its vital services, including rental assistance, case management, domestic violence prevention and shelter, and unemployment assistance.

The services are funded by $250,000 in state funding for each municipality, and are a critical part of each city’s effort to alleviate and prevent homelessness in the region. Community Resource Center’s homelessness intervention efforts will focus on the placement of homeless households into permanent housing, while prevention activities are designed to prevent households from becoming unsheltered. Based on the needs of each household, support could include short-term rental assistance, rental arrears and late fees, security and utility deposits, landlord mediation/advocacy, new move-in expenses and employment assistance.

CRC’s CEO, John Van Cleef says, “This new partnership comes at a critical time for many San Diegans coping with loss of income due to COVID-19. Many are at risk of homelessness and sadly, some have already lost their homes. We are grateful to Assemblywoman Tasha Boerner Horvath for securing this funding in the California FY20 budget, and for the Cities of Carlsbad, Encinitas and Oceanside in working with CRC to expand our services to help meet the growing need in their cities.”

Since residents first experienced shutdowns due to the pandemic, CRC has seen an increase in need for its housing assistance, food pantry, domestic violence hotline and shelter. Since March 13, CRC has distributed emergency food to 4,673 needy families, answered 943 calls to its domestic violence hotline and coordinated providing shelter to homeless individuals and families and safety to victims of domestic violence.

Those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness are encouraged to reach out to the 41-year-old nonprofit organization for assistance during this challenging time.
