At 68, Camila never expected to start over. But she was living in an abusive situation and made the courageous decision to leave. She was facing homelessness and no support system to turn to and she reached out to CRC’s Elder Abuse Services, a program to help older adults regain safety, stability and dignity.
A CRC Victim Advocate met with Camila, providing immediate support and helping her make a safety plan to ensure her well-being and providing her with a motel voucher to provide shelter.
For three weeks, Camila stayed in temporary housing while collaborating with her advocate to secure a more stable future. A plan came together for her to move in with family in Los Angeles. But just as she prepared to leave, she learned that her sister had relocated to another state to escape the wildfires. Once again, Camila faced uncertainty—but this time, she wasn’t alone.
Camila was welcomed into Carol’s House, our emergency shelter for survivors of domestic violence, where she found safety and compassionate care. With access to counseling, advocacy, and essential resources including nutritious food, Camila was able to focus on healing and rebuilding. Now, she is preparing for her next chapter and has found a safe apartment of her own.
Every day, seniors in our community like Camila face abuse and housing insecurity—but CRC is here to ensure they never have to face it alone.
