When Katrina made the brave decision to seek safety for herself and her children, she faced financial hardship and homelessness. After the most recent incident of physical violence, her abuser was removed from the home. With the primary source of income gone, Katrina soon lost the family home and was left searching for a safe place for her children.
For months, Katrina did everything she could to protect her children and get back on their feet, finding shelter where she could, including hotels. Katrina reached out to CRC for support through our Domestic Violence Housing First program. With rental assistance for a security deposit, Katrina was able to secure a home where she and her children could feel safe and begin again.
As she worked to rebuild stability, Katrina also participated in wraparound support at CRC, including counseling, case management. Together with her case manager, she updated her monthly budget and explored supports that could help her family, including the Food and Nutrition program and connections to job resources. Katrina shared that one of her daughters has a cognitive disability and she connected with the San Diego Regional Center for additional services and resources.
Today, Katrina and her children are in a safe home of their own – and Katrina is building the next chapter with strength, determination and hope.
Domestic violence can quickly lead to housing instability. Katrina’s story shows what’s possible when a survivor has the support to secure safe housing and rebuild.
Everyone deserves to feel safe at home. Domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness for women and families – 38% of survivors report experiencing homelessness at some point (NNEDV). We’re here to help with safe shelter, counseling, housing assistance and compassionate care.
