A Safe Place to Begin Again

At 30 weeks pregnant and facing a high-risk pregnancy, Stephanie made the courageous decision to leave months of violence and seek safety.
She came to Community Resource Center’s Carol’s House emergency shelter, where she found a safe place to live, nutritious food and a compassionate community around her.
With support from her case manager, Stephanie began taking steps toward greater stability and independence. CRC helped connect her with essential resources and benefits, as well as baby supplies, clothing, a stroller and car seat to help her prepare for her daughter’s arrival.
Stephanie gave birth while living at Carol’s House, away from home and family. But safe from her abuser’s threats and surrounded by support, she was able to focus on her health and experience moments of joy as she welcomed her baby girl.
From the beginning, Stephanie was determined to build a different future for her family. She set goals for herself, including becoming financially independent and earning her real estate license.
Her hard work led to another important step forward when she and her daughter moved from Carol’s House into CRC’s transitional housing program. There, Stephanie continues building stability with ongoing case management and support.

Stephanie and her daughter also participate in CRC’s Therapeutic Children’s Center, which provides a nurturing environment and support for children and families healing from trauma.
Today, Stephanie and her baby girl are thriving. Stephanie continues working toward her goals while also becoming an encouraging presence for others in the CRC community.
Her journey is a reminder that finding safety can be the beginning of so much more. With a safe place to turn, practical resources and continued support, families can begin building the future they envision.
