Support helped Sylvia remain housed and move toward a safer future

At 78 years old, Sylvia came to Community Resource Center after experiencing abuse that forced her to leave her home and put her at risk of homelessness. Through services at CRC, including court advocacy, rental assistance, food assistance and compassionate case management, she was able to remain housed and begin rebuilding her life.
Sylvia received court advocacy and guidance that helped her obtain a restraining order, making it possible for her to move into a safer environment with her son. She also connected with CRC’s Elder Abuse Services, where she worked closely with a dedicated case manager who provided safety planning, care and steady guidance.
With support made possible by the Safe & Stable Housing Fund at San Diego Foundation, CRC provided Sylvia with timely rental assistance during a period of financial strain and uncertainty. This assistance helped her remain housed and avoid deeper crisis while she focused on rebuilding her life and moving toward longer-term stability. Her case manager shared, “That support gave Sylvia some much-needed breathing room and helped her focus on rebuilding her life with greater stability and hope.”
Sylvia was also connected to CalFresh for food assistance and is in the process of obtaining additional in-home support through IHSS. With her basic needs more secure, she has been able to focus on healing, supporting her family and moving forward with greater peace of mind.
Today, Sylvia continues to engage in services and remains committed to building a safer, more hopeful future. Reflecting on her journey, Sylvia shared, “I now feel more hopeful, more secure, and brighter about the future.”
Sylvia’s story is a powerful reminder that with compassionate care and the right resources, healing, dignity and hope are possible.
