Why Hunger Action Matters Now

September is Hunger Action Month, and this year the need is especially urgent.

According to Feeding America’s latest Map the Meal Gap data, food insecurity in San Diego County has surpassed peak pandemic levels, affecting nearly 430,000 people. At the same time, changes affecting CalFresh and other public benefits are adding uncertainty for families already making difficult choices.

Healthy food shouldn’t be a privilege. It should be within reach for everyone.

It’s staggering to think that people are going hungry right here in coastal North County. Hunger isn’t happening somewhere else. It is happening in our own communities.

Together, we can do something about it.

During Hunger Action Month, we’re raising support to help provide enough nutritious food for 10,000 meals through CRC’s Food & Nutrition Center, 10,000 opportunities for a neighbor to have one less thing to worry about.

At our Food & Nutrition Center, neighbors choose fresh produce, pantry staples and other foods that work for their households. Individuals experiencing homelessness can also access ready-to-eat food and care items. Last year, CRC helped 6,590 neighbors receive nutritious food.

For many neighbors, food assistance is a first step toward greater stability. Someone may come to CRC for groceries and also connect with housing support, counseling, legal advocacy or another resource.

Right now, your gift can go twice as far. Gifts made by September 29 through our Hunger Action Match Challenge will be matched dollar for dollar, up to a total $25,000, thanks to longtime CRC supporters and volunteers, the Helmut Kiffmann Fund at the San Diego Foundation.

You can also take part by learning, sharing and helping spread the word. Visit our Hunger Action Month page to find ways to get involved.

Thank you for being part of a community that looks out for one another and helps make healthy food more accessible to our neighbors.
