Black History Month is a time to celebrate Black history, culture and contributions and to deepen our understanding of the stories that have shaped our communities. Learning and honoring these stories helps build communities where dignity and care lead.
Celebrating 100 Years
This year marks 100 years of national Black history commemorations, with the 2026 theme “A Century of Black History Commemorations,” shared by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH).
The national observance traces back to the work of historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson, whose efforts helped launch a national observance of Black history and laid the foundation for what we recognize today as Black History Month.

How to Participate
Here are a few meaningful ways to take part this month – and beyond:
- Explore Black history in your community (local museums, exhibits, events)
- Read books by Black authors
- Learn about Black leaders and their legacies
- Support Black-owned businesses
- Watch films and documentaries by Black filmmakers
- Commit to learning beyond February
