“I am incredibly grateful and humbled that CRC received these honors from The San Diego Business Journal. As we celebrate 45 years of service, it’s important to recognize that none of this would be possible without the dedicated professionals and volunteers who bring CRC’s mission to life, and the unwavering support of our compassionate community,” said John Van Cleef. “Like all of our fellow nominees, CRC’s work is made possible by the self-giving love of people, and we will continue providing vital services to those who need them most as we look forward to building on this legacy of care for many years to come.”

The San Diego Business Journal‘s Nonprofit & Corporate Citizenship Awards recognize organizations and leaders that demonstrate excellence in service to the community, making significant contributions to improve the lives of people throughout the region. CRC’s mission focuses on supporting economically vulnerable individuals and families by providing them with healthy food, safe shelter, and the resources to build stable homes and safe relationships.

“John’s visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to our community have significantly impacted the lives of countless individuals and families,” said Tony Pata, Chairperson of CRC’s Board of Directors. “His dedication to CRC’s mission and his innovative approach to addressing community needs have not only enhanced service delivery but also greatly improved the lives of those served by CRC.”

Since 1979, CRC has been a cornerstone in North County San Diego, providing critical support to low-income individuals and families. In response to growing demand, CRC expanded its programs under the leadership of John Van Cleef. The organization established a Trauma Recovery Center in Carlsbad, broadened its counseling services for those affected by abuse and domestic violence, and enhanced its Food & Nutrition Program with home delivery and improved pantry distributions. In 2023, CRC distributed over 505,000 pounds of food through nearly 15,000 pantry visits.

Operating out of three locations in Encinitas, San Marcos, and Carlsbad, CRC serves over 7,200 people annually. As part of its mission, CRC offers a wide range of support including food assistance, housing stability, domestic violence shelter and prevention services, and counseling, all to help neighbors create paths to healthy food, stable homes and safe relationships.
