Wendy is a single mother of a dependent son, who is on disability with schizophrenia. She found herself homeless after the costs of caring for her son became too much and she was unable to work while taking care of him.
For over a year, Wendy and her son and their dog were living in a van in Palm Springs. In June 2017, Wendy decided to drive to the coast due to the heat and stayed in Encinitas for six months. The family was in need of food and help getting back on their feet. It was during this time that she found Community Resource Center and began coming to the Food & Nutrition Center for healthy food daily and an opportunity to shop weekly at the food pantry.
Wendy soon learned about CRC’s Encinitas Opening Doors program, providing assistance to homeless families in Encinitas. Wendy began working with Chad, a CRC case manager, who helped her with transportation expenses, provided a mailbox to receive mail and helped her apply for a grant for a housing down payment.
Today, Wendy and her son live in a 2-bedroom apartment back in the desert. Wendy says that she wouldn’t have been able to afford the deposit and down payment for the apartment without the help of CRC and the grant she received as part of the program. Wendy said, “We are so grateful for CRC and our case manager Chad! They should feel so good to help get two more homeless people off the street and into their own home.”
