Overcoming Trauma and Building a New Future
Sheila and her two-year-old daughter, Lisa, found refuge with CRC after fleeing a dangerous domestic abuse situation. As an asylum seeker from Eastern Europe, Sheila faced difficult challenges, including language barriers, cultural differences and the loss of her support network. Despite these obstacles, Sheila’s resilience, coupled with CRC’s compassionate, client-informed approach, helped her navigate the path toward stability and healing.
During their time in CRC’s domestic violence shelter, Carol’s House, Sheila received support to build a safe future for her family. Her case manager and the Therapeutic Children’s Center (TCC) provided culturally sensitive guidance and resources. For Lisa, the TCC became a comforting environment where she could communicate and feel supported, even with limited English proficiency.
To help Sheila overcome feelings of isolation, CRC’s staff worked to create an inclusive and understanding space. They translated communications into her native language and helped her access legal resources to address her immigration status and secure vital services.
With CRC’s assistance, Sheila took courageous steps toward rebuilding her life. She obtained a safe and stable apartment, childcare, and work, all while enrolling in college to create a more secure future for her daughter. Today, Sheila and Lisa are continuing to thrive in their safe, loving home.
