Rita never imagined she could become homeless. When Rita’s husband got sick, they depended on savings and Rita’s part-time job for income. When Rita’s husband passed away, she struggled to get back on her feet. Rita lived with her daughter and took care of her grand-kids, but was evicted because her daughter had too many people in the apartment.
For two years, Rita was homeless. She says, “It was horrible. Sometimes I was scared to sleep. Nobody ever asked me if I needed help.”
A friend told Rita about Community Resource Center, and she started coming to our Food & Nutrition Center weekly, storing food in her suitcase. Rita’s case manager, Chad, helped her receive Rapid Rehousing to provide the deposit and short-term rental assistance for an apartment at Mission Cove, an affordable community for seniors in Oceanside.
Rita loves her new home and is excited for the simple things like having a shower, a kitchen and a bed. After searching for employment, Rita also recently found a job at WalMart.
