Duke’s Story | Volunteering at our Food & Nutrition Center

“Monday owns my heart. I go home so full. I feel so blessed. I see what a difference CRC makes in peoples’ lives.”

Every Monday, CRC volunteer Duke Skaff runs Community Resource Center’s Food & Nutrition Center food distribution. As lead volunteer for the day, Duke oversees a group of volunteers who help guide families and individuals through the Center to select the food they need for their household. When a participant or family walks in, they are greeted at the door and they introduce themselves. Duke and her volunteers ask the participant about their dietary needs and make sure to provide items that will be beneficial to their family.

Duke says that the Center is about more than just food: “Everyone has a story. I’ve met seniors who can’t make it on social security. I served a woman in her forties whose husband had left her. She was wearing nice clothing, but she had lost everything. As a volunteer, the main need is to make sure the participants feel comfortable and know they are not alone. We’re all in this together. This could be me.”

Duke shares that volunteering at CRC for the past two years has been a very impactful experience. She says, “Monday owns my heart. I go home so full. I feel so blessed. I see what a difference CRC makes in peoples’ lives.”

One of the joys of serving is learning about successes from past participants. Duke shares, “Last year, a participant returned who had been homeless to tell us how he was doing. It was the little things that made him so happy. He said he now had a toilet. And a closet. It was really heartwarming.”

Thank you, Duke, for serving with compassion and kindness every week!
