Amanda’s Story | Domestic Violence Shelter & Counseling

“I’m very grateful for the shelter, the classes, the counseling and the support. It’s been a great blessing in our lives.” – Amanda

Can you imagine starting all over? Starting a completely new life in a completely new place?

Amanda, her 4-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter had to do just that. Amanda knew she and her children were in danger and had to leave her children’s abusive father. She found emergency shelter out of her state, in San Diego at Community Resource Center’s Carol’s House.

With a difficult journey ahead, Amanda and her children traveled to safety and a new beginning.

In December 2017, Amanda and her children moved into Carol’s House, participating in all of the comprehensive services available, including counseling, legal advocacy, case management, food assistance and housing assistance.

Amanda’s young children attended family counseling and played at the Therapeutic Children’s Center. Amanda worked with a CRC case manager to plan for her next steps and received legal advocacy help. She participated in the domestic violence support groups and classes, learning from other individuals who had experienced similar circumstances.

During her stay, Amanda had the time and resources to help her children, who were starting to abuse mom and throw uncontrollable tantrums. Children who witness domestic violence in the home often manifest their trauma through behavioral changes. Amanda was able to obtain support at school and support from CRC’s counselors for the children. The children are now seeing a counselor to support their behavioral therapy treatment.

After living at our shelter and transitional housing for several months, Amanda and her children moved into their own apartment. Amanda started her own small business in farmers markets, where she sells beautiful crafts and items from her home country.

Amanda says, “I’m very grateful for the shelter, the classes, the counseling and the support. It’s been a great blessing in our lives.”

With caring support and resources, families like Amanda’s can begin to heal and break the cycle of violence.
