Press Release: Help End Hunger During Hunger Action Month

Community Resource Center Invites Community Members to Help End Hunger During Hunger Action Month

Encinitas, Calif., September 9, 2020—This September, Community Resource Center (CRC) invites community members to help end hunger during Hunger Action Month. CRC joins with Feeding San Diego to raise awareness of food insecurity in San Diego. Food and funds raised as part of Hunger Action Month will help provide critical food distribution for children, survivors of domestic violence, homeless families, and seniors in North County San Diego.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, food insecurity has increased in San Diego. According to the San Diego Hunger Coalition, before COVID-19, 1 in 5 children experienced hunger in San Diego. Now, due to the effects of the pandemic, nationally, 1 in 3 children do not always have enough to eat.

CRC has seen an increase in need for its food pantry, housing assistance, domestic violence hotline and shelter. Since March 13, CRC has distributed emergency food to 6,570 needy households, answered 1,275 calls to its domestic violence hotline and coordinated providing shelter to homeless individuals and families and safety to victims of domestic violence.

CRC’s CEO, John Van Cleef says, “No one should have to worry about how they will get their next meal. The pandemic has elevated hunger in our region and many need food assistance for the first time. We encourage the community to join us during Hunger Action Month by hosting a food drive and raising awareness about the growing need.”

CRC invites community members to help provide healthy food for neighbors in need by taking action:

  • Raise awareness: Wear orange, the color for Hunger Action Month, and share support on Hunger Action Day, Thursday, September 10, on social media or throughout the month of September. Tag @SanDiegoCRC, @FeedingSan Diego and hashtag #HungerActionMonth, #EveryActionCounts and #HungerFreeSD.
  • Raise funds: Invite friends and family to join in the fight to end hunger by starting a fundraiser to support Community Resource Center.
  • Host a food drive: Hold a socially-distanced food drive in your neighborhood or create a virtual food drive to help keep CRC’s food pantry stocked with the items that families and seniors in our community need most.
  • Advocate: Help protect hunger relief programs for millions of Americans by joining the Campaign to End Hunger from CRC’s partners at Feeding America.
