Holiday Baskets
Community Resource Center (CRC) distributed its first “baskets” of food and gifts to 50 low-income working families a quarter of a century ago. We operated Holiday Baskets out of a small cottage in Encinitas. We’ve kept the name “Holiday Baskets” because so many people recognize it, but the baskets have been replaced with shopping carts filled with staple foods, clothing, gifts, and much more.

The program currently serves an estimated 1,200 families in need every holiday season.
Volunteers and staff now spend nearly a month converting a Del Mar Fairgrounds facility the size of a football field into a warehouse-like store. Tables and shelves are stocked with items collected by over 200 businesses and organizations. Then, over a 3-day period, registered families in need go “shopping” with a volunteer host who works from lists prepared by CRC Social Services staff.
This dignified shopping experience provides low-income families with basic necessities as well as a few surprises to brighten their holidays. We also organize deliveries to homebound seniors and to others who lack access to transportation.
